Getting the smart-casual outfit right

The Oxford Dictionary defines smart-casual as “neat, conventional, yet relatively informal in style”. Many occasions require a smart-casual outfit: dinner and drinks with friends, a family gathering, a party, going on a date, drinks receptions, events and much more. But the term “smart-casual” sparks panic and uncertainty, many not wanting to under- or overdress.

There is an art to mastering a smart-casual outfit. You don’t want to look too smart, but equally you don’t want to look too casual. That is why, as a general rule, we suggest a pair of straight-leg jeans with a shirt, blazer and smart shoes like loafers, with a pullover for chilly weather. Or, perhaps opt for a shirt, pullover jumper and chinos, with smart shoes.

When choosing your smart-casual outfit you should avoid trainers, sandals and pumps. Jeans should not be too baggy and either navy or black in the winter for a more formal edge. If you choose to wear a blazer from a suit, it would pair nicely with jeans, or if the blazer is unstructured, couple it with neutral colour chinos. In colder winter months, you may choose to include knitwear. Why not try a classic V-neck with a shirt underneath or a roll-neck jumper and a blazer or smart coat? Knitwear should be slim fitted and if it is patterned, opt for neutral coloured trousers or jeans.
